It is unacceptable that we are forced to listen to comments which completely contradict the correct operation of VAR, and yet nothing happens,” Gil Marin stated via the club’s official website.

“Referees have the same right to make mistakes as players, coaches, and executives, but errors in play are just that – errors. It is an entirely different matter when a VAR official predisposes the on-field referee while they are in the process of judging an incident,” he continued.

The Atletico chief executive argued that “the on-field referee must bear the ultimate responsibility and make decisions by interpreting the intention of each individual.”

“VAR should only intervene to correct factual errors, not to decide in place of the on-field referee,” warned Gil Marin, who pointed to his side’s last two outings—defeats against Real Madrid (3-2) and Barcelona (1-2). “It is not normal for different decisions to be made in identical incidents, for the criteria to shift, and for us to be left in the dark. This has happened to us across the last two matchdays. It makes no sense.”

The Atletico Madrid CEO reiterated his frustration over the inconsistent application of criteria regarding Gerard Martin’s non-sending off. He contrasted the decision with the explanation provided by the Referees’ Technical Committee (CTA) for a similar incident during the Betis-Rayo fixture on matchday 25 of La Liga.

“Worst of all, the CTA itself explained a similar incident a few matchdays ago, asserting that it should have resulted in a red card. Yet yesterday, in an identical play, the referee made the correct initial call only for VAR to lead him into an error by overstepping its functions—the very functions they explained to players, coaches, and directors, but which, regrettably, are not being upheld,” he concluded.

Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin launched a scathing attack on VAR and the refereeing standards following

[2

post-1505","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
