Simon Kjaer, who left Milan in the summer, announced on Danish public television that he is retiring. He already announced four months ago that he would not return to play for his national team, but now, seeing that he has not been able to find a peaceful destination for this season, he has decided to hang up his boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Denmark captain and Sevilla player Simon Kjaer announced on Monday his retirement from professional football at the age of 35. Kjaer, who had already left the national team after the last European Championship, was without a team after finishing his contract with Milan, with whom he played the last four seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow was the right time to close this chapter,\u201d said the player in an interview with the channel \u2018TV2\u2019. The centre-back, who has had several physical problems in recent years, claimed to have had offers from teams in the five major leagues, but was not satisfied with the role he was assigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his long professional career, he wore the jersey of, among others, Palermo, Roma, Atalanta, Milan, Wolfsburg, Lille and Sevilla (2017-2019). With Denmark, he made 132 appearances, the 2nd most capped after Christian Eriksen. \u201cIt’s not a decision I made after the summer, I had been thinking about it since before the European Championship,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the autumn of 2023, I can see that my time at Milan could be coming to an end and I asked myself what I was going to do then. There were many things that made me make this decision after the European Championship: to see what was on the table, to see that it was not the best fit for me, first for my family and then in terms of sport. I have no regrets. I don’t miss anything in that sense,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked if he was bothered by the anticlimactic nature of announcing his retirement now that he has been without a team for half a season, he replied: \u201cNo, not at all. I had the end of my time at Milan in mind. I knew very well that it was going to be very complicated to find something else and the process, in my mind, could not have had a better outcome. I had my farewell at the San Siro. There, I knew it was my end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have had no need to inform anyone but myself. Looking back, easily, I could have made a much more mediatic farewell and signed for another big club after Milan, but I have no need. That’s why we are also sitting here in January: because, for me, it was not important to have a big farewell,\u201d he further explained.
