The 79-year-old saw off the challenge of Enrique Riquelme and is set to lead the club until 2030.

Florentino Perez is set to remain at the helm of Real Madrid until 2030. This Sunday, the executive emerged victorious from the club’s first contested election in two decades, defeating Enrique Riquelme at the polls.

The electoral process, held at Valdebebas between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM, saw a massive turnout that eclipsed the figures from 2006. On that occasion, Ramon Calderon had succeeded Perez himself, narrowly beating out the likes of Juan Palacios, Juan Miguel Villar Mir, Lorenzo Sanz, and Arturo Baldasano.

Having returned to the presidency three years later following the scandal-hit resignation of Calderon, Perez had not faced an opponent since. Re-elected by acclamation in 2013, 2017, 2021, and early 2025, the ACS chief took the footballing world by surprise. During a controversial press conference on May 12, he opted to defy his internal critics by calling for these snap elections.

Despite the condensed timeframe, Enrique Riquelme moved quickly to formalise his candidacy. In recent weeks, Florentino Perez intensified his campaign to promote his flagship project: a comprehensive overhaul of the corporate model. The proposal involves selling a 5% stake in the club to a strategic investor to inject liquidity and establish a true market value, thereby boosting the worth of the socios’ shares. While the president maintains this move will permanently protect the members, it became the primary flashpoint with the opposition, who accused him of undermining the internal democracy of Real Madrid.

Despite his victory, Perez’s reform still hinges on approval from an extraordinary assembly and ratification via a binding referendum among the socios. To counter accusations of privatisation, the businessman had a commitment notarized on June 3, guaranteeing that the club will remain the exclusive property of its members, with assets ring-fenced until the end of his term in 2030, which could be his final tenure.

On the institutional front, the re-elected president’s pledges focus on the commercial potential of the revamped Santiago Bernabeu. Florentino Perez has guaranteed the return of major concerts and is banking on innovations such as the ‘Infinite Bernabeu’ in virtual reality. Furthermore, he highlighted a new agreement with UEFA for the revamped Champions League and the return of free-to-air broadcasts, effectively signalling the end of the Super League project. The sporting project, by contrast, only took centre stage in the final days of the campaign.

Detailing his technical plans, the 79-year-old revealed several marquee additions: centre-back Ibrahima Konate, right-back Denzel Dumfries, and the sensational return of Jose Mourinho. Even before the election was called, rumours had linked ‘The Special One’ with a return to replace Arbeloa. The official appointment of ‘Mou’ is expected this Monday, after Benfica announced that the coach’s release clause had risen to 15 million euros.

On the opposition side, Enrique Riquelme attempted to court the electorate with the promised signing of Rodri, but his campaign suffered a setback after he claimed to have secured Erling Haaland during a television appearance; hours later, Manchester City and agent Rafaela Pimenta issued a stinging denial. The candidate also saw a purported agreement with Jurgen Klopp collapse, later clarifying it was merely a commercial intention.

A significant aspect of the battle was the backing given to the opposition list by club legends such as Raul Gonzalez, Fernando Hierro, Vicente del Bosque, and Iker Casillas. Although none enjoyed a particularly amicable departure during the Florentino era, sporting success often masks such friction: he remains the most decorated president in the history of Real Madrid. His tenure boasts 66 trophies across football (37) and basketball (29), including seven Champions League crowns and seven LaLiga titles.

This re-election follows the club’s first trophyless season in both disciplines since 2010. However, this rare drought failed to shake the members’ faith in Florentino Perez, who emerges from the polls with a renewed mandate to spearhead the ‘Merengue’ strategy for the next four years.

Real Madrid have confirmed Florentino Perez’s victory at the polls.
