It has taken a while to be announced, but it\u2019s now official: Antonio R\u00fcdiger will spend another season at Real Madrid. The club is counting on the German to return to his best form and support Jos\u00e9 Mourinho in the first season of his project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real Madrid are working tirelessly on their plans for next season. The presidential elections have delayed certain decisions that were to be taken in consultation with Jos\u00e9 Mourinho, who is already working on what he hopes will be his squad for his return to the Spnaish side. Antonio Rudiger will be part of that squad following the contract extension that both parties have now announced, cementing a deal that had been taking shape just a few months ago. The German wanted to stay with the Whites and the club wanted to retain a veteran presence in such a young squad, particularly at the heart of the defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rudiger has thus confirmed that he will remain with Real Madrid for another year. With the unwritten rule of not signing players over the age of thirty for more than one season, the German defender will be completing his fifth campaign with Real Madrid since joining from Chelsea in the 2022-23 season. Although his form has dipped somewhat, he has become an important figure in the dressing room too, and the club believes he can continue to contribute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This past season, alongside the rest of the team, Rudiger has not performed to the expected standard. Not even physically, as he has missed many matches through injury. The centre-back had played 53, 48 and 55 matches, in that order, during his first three years at Real Madrid. This past season, he managed just 26, 24 of which were as a starter. That inconsistency caused the club to have second thoughts about renewing his contract at times, but ultimately the scales tipped in his favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will be a year in which Real Madrid\u2019s defence will lose key players such as Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, who, although they had failed to perform to their usual standard this past season, are very important figures in the dressing room. In a squad featuring Raul Asencio, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras as the younger options, retaining a player of R\u00fcdiger\u2019s calibre could prove vital. Add to that the arrivals of Dumfries and Konat\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He will therefore remain at the club until at least June 2027 and will be part of Jose Mourinho\u2019s squad for this first season. The Portuguese manager has always had experienced centre-backs in his teams. That role was previously filled by Ricardo Carvalho, and later by Pepe, at Real Madrid. During his most recent spell at Benfica, it was Nicolas Otamendi.
