UEFA has warned Gianni Infantino of potential legal proceedings following his failed attempt to sell the World Cup, with The Telegraph reporting that the governing body has ordered the FIFA president to preserve all evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Gianni Infantino backing down from his controversial bid to privatise the World Cup, UEFA has refused to let the matter rest, launching a direct counter-offensive. Aleksander Ceferin\u2019s organisation has formally threatened the FIFA president with legal action over the ill-fated attempt to overhaul the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Escalating the dispute, European football’s governing body has dispatched a stern warning letter to FIFA headquarters, demanding that no evidence related to the matter be destroyed. The Telegraph, which has obtained the missive, reports that UEFA also contacted Joshua Kushner, Greg Maffei, JP Morgan, and OpenEconomics. The message was clear: the federation is considering “resorting to arbitration and\/or filing complaints with regulatory authorities” in response to the botched initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA had already laid down a marker on Thursday, announcing that none of its 55 member associations would participate in the proposed FIFA competitions. Other continental bodies, including CONCACAF, have also voiced their opposition, rejecting the proposal while calling for greater transparency and more robust governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA’s letter to Infantino:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“UEFA hereby serves notice that it is actively considering taking legal action, initiating arbitration proceedings, and\/or lodging complaints with regulatory bodies arising from, and in connection with, the FIFA-proposed FFE plan and all related matters, as further described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both you and FIFA are required to take immediate steps to identify, locate, and preserve all documents and electronically stored information described in this notice that are in your possession, custody, or control, or in FIFA’s. These obligations apply regardless of any internal retention policies maintained by you or your organisation, and override any routine document destruction or deletion policies that might otherwise apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA – alongside other confederations, FIFA member associations, and football stakeholders – has forcefully condemned the FFE plan in the strongest possible terms as fundamentally incompatible with good football governance. Given that litigation is reasonably foreseeable, you are obliged to preserve all relevant material (as defined below) with immediate effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA formally warns you that any destruction, suppression, alteration, concealment, or loss of relevant materials following receipt of this notice – or any earlier date upon which you knew, or reasonably should have known, that litigation was foreseeable – may constitute spoliation of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA reserves all rights to seek appropriate remedies in the proceedings for any such destruction or loss, including requests for adverse inference rulings, sanctions, and costs against the responsible party or parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA requests that you acknowledge receipt of this notice in writing within five (5) business days of its date, and confirm in said acknowledgment: (i) that you have received and understood this notice; (ii) that you have taken immediate steps to preserve relevant materials as required; (iii) the identity of the executive or individual responsible for overseeing compliance with this notice within your organisation; and (iv) whether you are aware of any relevant material that has already been destroyed or deleted, in which case you must provide full details thereof,” it concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
