Real Madrid edged past Inter 2-1 at the Bernabeu to maintain their European hex over the Italian giants, with Mbappe and Valverde striking before Carlos Augusto’s late reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bernab\u00e9u once again proved to be a graveyard of Inter’s ambitions, a lingering nightmare that refuses to fade. Their Champions League opener followed an all-too-familiar script, ending in another defeat against Jos\u00e9 Mourinho’s former club, Real Madrid. The hoodoo lives on: four meetings between the sides in European competition this century, and four victories for Los Blancos. To find Inter’s last triumph at the Santiago Bernab\u00e9u, you have to go all the way back to 1967. Madrid, meanwhile, quickly banished the ghosts of their home defeat to Betis, making a flying start on the stage they know better than anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real Madrid initially allowed the visitors to dictate the tempo, but Los Blancos needed only the slightest lapse in concentration to strike. Bisseck gave the ball away dangerously inside his own half, allowing Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 to surge forward, exchange a razor-sharp one-two with Brahim D\u00edaz and coolly fire past Mart\u00ednez. The second blow arrived in the 23rd minute, courtesy of a calamitous mistake from the Inter goalkeeper himself. Mart\u00ednez attempted to dribble past Valverde, but ‘El Pajarito’ dispossessed him and calmly carried the ball into an empty net. The Spanish goalkeeper did at least redeem himself afterwards, producing several important saves to prevent the deficit from becoming even greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inter had actually made a promising start, threatening early on through a Thuram effort that forced a smart save from Courtois, while a deflection off Huijsen almost resulted in a bizarre own goal. However, costly mistakes from Bisseck and Mart\u00ednez shattered their momentum and handed the initiative to the hosts. The Nerazzurri tried to fight their way back through Lautaro Mart\u00ednez and Curtis Jones, but Courtois was in inspired form. Their persistence finally paid off fifteen minutes from time when Carlos Augusto met a dangerous cross from ‘El Toro’ and guided the ball home with his right foot, beating Dumfries to the finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
