In an interview with ‘Suddeutsche Zeitung’, Raphinha revealed that Hansi Flick’s intervention stopped him leaving Barcelona in 2024, having already deemed his time at the club over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barcelona are currently reaping the rewards of an irresistible Raphinha. The Brazil international headed into the international break on the back of the most prolific goalscoring start by any player in the Catalan club’s history. Yet back in 2024, amid relentless speculation linking the club with Nico Williams, the forward had one foot out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to German daily ‘S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung’, Raphinha made no secret of his profound gratitude to Hansi Flick, whom he credits directly with his decision to stay in Catalonia: “The coach changed my life. I will say it forever. He was the person who transformed my mentality, both at the club and as a person,” he highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I had practically considered my time at FC Barcelona over. My head was already elsewhere; I wanted to leave. If I had not had that conversation with Flick and if he had not convinced me, in a matter of minutes, that he was counting on me and trusted me, I would not be here right now,” explained the former Leeds United forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Raphinha, Flick reached out by phone while the winger was still on holiday following the Copa America. The Brazilian recalled the conversation with the German tactician: “He told me: ‘Before you make any decision, come and we will talk’. He said he felt I would still be very important to the team and that the squad would be crucial for my development as a player. Today, looking back, that is strictly what happened,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was not even a particularly long conversation. When a manager gives you confidence, few words are needed. And I immediately felt that he had full faith in me,” added the 29-year-old forward, now wearing the captain’s armband. It was a dramatic turnaround that he reflects on clearly: “It is about feeling valued and knowing that someone sees potential in you that you had not even discovered yourself. It was a complete mindset shift,” he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Raphinha praised Flick’s man-management and reiterated his gratitude: “I believe that, in football, there is no more important relationship than manager-player. If there is one thing the boss emphasised and showed from the very start, it was precisely that: we can approach him to talk about anything.
