Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie hit out at the decision to overturn a late penalty in their Champions League semi-final first-leg draw with Atletico Madrid, claiming the official’s error was “clear as day.”
Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie insisted that referee Danny Makkelie “made a clear mistake” by opting not to award a penalty for David Hancko’s challenge on Eberechi Eze following a VAR review.
“They had their chances, but we had ours and we knew how to counter them. The final result is a bit… The penalty was clear as day. The referee made a clear mistake. It was a blatant penalty and I hope we get a bit more respect in the future,” he told ‘Movistar’.
Despite the late controversy, the Gunners defender maintained that his side left the Metropolitano “with good feelings.”
“We had plenty of opportunities ourselves. It was a tough match, and now we look forward to playing at home in the Champions League second leg against Atletico Madrid.”
