Barcelona sporting director Deco has left the door open for Robert Lewandowski’s potential contract extension, emphasising that the decision ultimately rests with the Polish striker.
Deco has a challenging agenda at Barcelona, not only overseeing the January transfer window but also planning for next season.
One of the club’s key priorities is the future of Lewandowski, whose contract runs until the end of this campaign. As of now, no talks regarding an extension or departure have taken place.
“Robert is enjoying his time at Barca. He is one of the best strikers in recent years and a crucial player for us. It will depend on him; he has a year left on his contract.
“We don’t yet know what his plans are. We will need to sit down and talk clearly. Right now, our focus is on key moments of the season, so I don’t think it’s the right time,” Deco told Cadena SER on Monday.
When asked about Xabi Alonso’s recent sacking at Real Madrid, Deco commented: “It surprised me a bit because Xabi’s work at Real Madrid had just begun; he hadn’t been there long. It’s very difficult to comment without being involved day-to-day, so I prefer not to say much more.”
On Hansi Flick and his situation, Deco added: “The manager is a great coach and a great person. A change in management was needed; we have a young dressing room alongside experienced players. We must enjoy these moments. He has another year on his contract, and now is not the time to discuss it. Our focus must remain on the upcoming titles.”
Regarding Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Deco confirmed: “There’s nothing planned at the moment. The truth is, we are happy with Marc. The priority was his recovery, and he is now fully available.
“Sporting decisions are made by the coach; we don’t interfere. If a player is unhappy and asks to leave for more playing time, we listen.”
Deco also praised Raphinha: “He is returning to his best form. He is very important for the team – he drives us forward, presses, inspires, works hard and scores goals. He is a key player. The plan has always been to keep this squad because we know its quality perfectly. We had no intention of selling anyone. Raphinha has always shown that he wants to stay at the club and make history here.”
