Barcelona endured a tough challenge, watched Albacete reignite the game in the final minutes, but responded with composure in injury time.
FC Barcelona secured their passage to the next round with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Albacete, in a match that was only decided in stoppage time and delivered excitement until the very last second.
From the opening whistle, Barca dominated possession and sought to impose their game, heavily relying on the dynamism of Lamine Yamal, who quickly started causing problems down the flank. As early as the 4th minute, the young winger delivered a precise cross to Marcus Rashford, who incredibly missed a clear-cut opportunity. Shortly after, Dani Olmo also appealed for a penalty after contact in the box, but the referee waved play on, a decision that sparked protests.
The Catalan persistence eventually paid off in the 38th minute, when Lamine Yamal, seizing an opportune moment in the center of the box, finished first-time into the back of the net, putting justice on the scoreboard and confirming the Blaugrana’s dominance in the first half.
In the second half, Barcelona started even more aggressively. Dani Olmo, Rashford, and Lewandowski pushed Albacete deep, forcing Raul Lizoain into several high-level saves. The second goal arrived in the 56th minute, from a corner kick: Ronald Araujo rose above everyone and headed home unstoppably, extending the advantage.
With the game seemingly under control, Hansi Flick made changes to the team, bringing on Ferran Torres, who entered with great intensity. The Spanish forward created danger on several occasions, squandered clear chances, but never stopped searching for a goal, largely due to his constant link-up play with Lamine Yamal.
Albacete, far from giving up, sprang to life in the final minutes. First, they saw a goal disallowed for offside, and then, in the 86th minute, Javi Moreno halved the deficit with a precise header from a set-piece, completely reigniting the match.
What followed were minutes of true agony, with Albacete throwing everything forward in attack and Barca defending with all their might. In stoppage time, Fran Gamez came close to equalizing, but the Catalan defense threw themselves at the ball with a crucial block.
Just when an equalizer seemed a real threat, the final blow arrived. In the 90th minute, Ferran Torres, after so much persistence, appeared unmarked in the six-yard box and tapped the ball into the net, but it was disallowed for offside.
The final whistle confirmed Barcelona’s qualification, in a match where Lamine Yamal shone, Ronald Araujo was decisive, and Ferran Torres’ persistence was rewarded, in a victory that demanded talent… and a great deal of character.
