Manchester United’s efforts to strengthen their squad have taken a hit as Federico Dimarco has rejected their interest to sign a new long-term contract with Inter Milan, according to English reports.

The 27-year-old Italian, who has been a key player for Inter with three goals and three assists in 14 Serie A matches this campaign, chose to remain loyal to the club he supported as a child and rose through their academy ranks. Inter are now working to extend his contract until 2028 or 2029.

United manager Ruben Amorim, who took charge in October following Erik ten Hag’s departure, faces a challenging rebuilding process. Although United recently secured a dramatic 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City, the team remains a work in progress.

Amorim is expected to oversee significant changes in the January transfer window as he reshapes the squad, with both incoming reinforcements and potential high-profile departures on the horizon.

Left-back has been a problematic position for United, with injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia leaving them short of options. While Dimarco was a top priority, United may now need to look elsewhere for reinforcements.

Arsenal also showed interest in Dimarco, but his decision to stay at Inter underscores his commitment to the Serie A club.
