Frenkie de Jong spoke about his future at Barcelona, where he is now happy to continue for several more years.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong confirmed in statements to the Dutch press that he is confident of renewing his current contract with the Catalan club, which expires on June 30th, 2026, this summer.
“I think I will sign a new contract with Barca. I can’t be 100% sure, but if everything goes well, it will happen. My intention is to renew this summer, but we’ll see what happens. It’s a negotiation and we can’t say when (it will be finalised). The important thing is that both parties want it and I think we will reach an agreement,” he said to the microphone of ‘Voetbalzone’.
De Jong, who avoided answering questions about a possible bust-up with his agent Ali Dursun, spoke after completing 90 minutes in the Netherlands’ 2-0 win over Finland in Helsinki in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The player’s statements coincide with the words of Barcelona’s sporting director, Anderson Luis de Souza ‘Deco’, who recently praised the player’s involvement in Barca’s successes – champions of La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, and semi-finalist of the Champions League – and remarked that the club’s intention is to renew his contract this summer.
Absent in the early part of the season due to injury and questioned by some fans for his performance in previous years, De Jong improved his performances in the second half of the season and established himself as an undisputed starter alongside Pedri in midfield under the orders of coach Hansi Flick.
The Netherlands international signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2019 from Ajax and has made 259 appearances as a ‘Cule’ in which he has scored 19 goals and provided 21 assists.
