Barcelona left-back Gerard Martin said after the 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League that it is better to suffer this type of defeat at this stage of the season than when it could cost them elimination from the competition.
Barcelona failed to secure their second consecutive victory in this edition of the Champions League after a late goal from Goncalo Ramos gave Paris Saint-Germain the win at Montjuic.
Gerard Martin, who was one of the players who suffered most from the Parisian side’s constant attacks, said after the match that it was better to suffer this type of defeat at this stage of the season rather than later, as they are not decisive and serve as a learning experience for what lies ahead.
“If defeat must happen, let it happen now so that we can learn during the season… And when the knockout stages come, it doesn’t repeat,” he told reporters. “I think we entered the match on good form, but in the last 15 minutes of the first half and throughout the second half we were not at our best level,” he added.
“We lost control of the ball, and we lost it a lot, and in the end they are a strong team and they imposed their style and rhythm on us somewhat. For a team to press you throughout the second half in the end beats you,” he concluded.
