Lamine Yamal registered ‘304’, his goal celebration gesture referencing his home district of Rocafonda, this summer. The trademark protects a wide range of products, from clothing to sporting goods, for commercial use within the EU.
Lamine Yamal has registered seven community trademarks, valid until 2035, with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), headquartered in Alicante. Two of these trademarks use his first and last name, while the other five refer to the number ‘304’, corresponding to the last three digits of the postal code of his home district, Rocafonda, in Mataro (Spain).
In addition to the generic registration of the term ‘Lamine Yamal’ and a graph he commonly uses with rectangular characters, the Barcelona player has also filed the trademarks ‘LY304’, ‘304’, and ‘304 FC’. He has further registered two additional figurative trademarks representing the gesture he makes with his fingers to form the three-zero-four.
In this well-known gesture, Yamal crosses his arms: with his left hand, he extends his pinky, ring, and middle fingers to represent the ‘3’; he forms a circle with his index finger and thumb for the ‘0’; and, with his thumb folded, he extends the remaining fingers of his right hand to form the ‘4’.
In this way, the 18-year-old celebrates every success on the pitch, recalling his deep connection to the modest neighborhood where he grew up, a working-class and multicultural area that he doesn’t forget to highlight and where he is particularly appreciated.
From Footballs to Video Games
The first trademarks in his name were officially registered last May for clothing, sporting goods, caps, jackets, sports shoes, and underwear. Shortly thereafter, the EUIPO also extended the protection of the ‘LY304’, ‘304’, and ‘304 FC’ trademarks to other items.
Among the products whose commercial exploitation is now reserved for the young Spanish international are footballs, gloves, dolls, glasses, helmets, watches, headphones, backpacks, weight bars, and, naturally, electronic games.
More recently, Lamine Yamal has also decided to protect the logo featuring the hand gesture forming ‘304’ for all the products and services already mentioned. This protection also extends to various educational, entertainment, and sports activities, as well as shows and musical performances, the organization of events, competitions, and tournaments.
Lamine Yamal, a Brand to Protect
With nearly 40 million followers on Instagram and TikTok, the Barcelona player enjoys worldwide recognition.
The registration of his most emblematic symbols allows the player to ensure the exclusivity of their use, preventing third parties from unduly exploiting his image, as almost happened a little over a year ago.
Indeed, a Portuguese national had filed, on July 11, 2024, an application to register the trademark ‘Lamine Yamal’ for clothing, advertising, and educational and training activities, several months before the player himself. However, without any reason being made public, she decided to withdraw her application, rendering it void two months later.
This trademark would probably have been rejected by the EUIPO because it was not directly related to the athlete. Nevertheless, the person interrupted the procedure before any potential appeals were filed or examined.
Thanks to the protection of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, Lamine Yamal now owns his most emblematic distinctive signs, allowing him to develop his promising career in the commercial sector, beyond the pitch.
