Frenkie de Jong is set to extend his contract with Barcelona until 2029, the club have confirmed. The Dutch midfielder, who joined the Catalan side in the summer of 2019, is due to sign the renewal on Wednesday.
While the precise terms of the extension have not been officially disclosed, it is understood that De Jong, whose current deal was due to expire on 30 June, will commit for an additional three seasons, keeping him at Barcelona until June 2029.
According to Mundo Deportivo, his release clause will be increased to €500 million, €100 million higher than his existing clause. Under Hansi Flick, De Jong has become a key figure in the double pivot alongside Pedri, establishing himself as a central component of the German coach’s plans.
Despite several injury setbacks, particularly with his right ankle during the 2023/24 season, which caused him to miss several matches, De Jong has already made 267 appearances for Barcelona and is on track to surpass the 300 mark this season.
The contract renewal secures the backbone of Barcelona’s midfield for the years ahead. Several other key players also have long-term deals, with contracts running until 2029 (Fermin Lopez, Bernal and De Jong) or 2030 (Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo), signalling the club’s commitment to stability in the heart of the team.
