FC Barcelona face Mallorca this Saturday, a team they have scored against in 24 years and 33 uninterrupted matches. It is the longest active scoring streak in current Primera Division fixtures.
If you’re considering a goalless draw between FC Barcelona and Mallorca, be aware that the odds are stacked against it. This isn’t solely due to the Blaugrana’s formidable attacking power or Vedat Muriqi’s impressive season. This fixture has consistently delivered goals for nearly a quarter of a century, particularly from the ‘cule’ perspective.
The last time the Blaugrana failed to score against the Balearic side was on 9 February 2002. On that occasion, Charly Rexach’s Barca played out a goalless draw at Son Moix against Sergio Kresic’s Mallorca. These were transitional years in Barcelona, preceding a significant era for the ‘bermellones’. Players like Luque, Miguel Angel Nadal, Paunovic, Ibagaza, and Carlitos would go on to lift the Copa del Rey just a year later.
Since then, despite Mallorca’s periods in lower divisions, Barca have scored in 33 consecutive league matches against them. This stands as the longest active scoring streak between any two teams currently competing in La Liga. Within this run, Mallorca claimed three victories – most recently a 2-1 win at Son Moix in 2009 – and two matches ended in draws, with the ‘cules’ securing the other 29 wins. Across these encounters, Barca have netted 87 goals, while the ‘bermellones’ have scored 24.
Intriguingly, this 33-match streak mirrors their scoring run against Levante. This means that FC Barcelona could potentially break this tie on Saturday, only to equal it again on 22 February, in two weeks’ time. The ‘granotas’ case is even more remarkable, as those 33 matches represent every single La Liga encounter between the two clubs. In essence, the ‘cules’ have never failed to score against the Valencian side since their inaugural meeting in 1963.
Historically, two other streaks have surpassed Barca’s current run. Firstly, Real Madrid against Real Zaragoza. Between April 1981 and December 1997, the ‘blancos’ netted 82 goals in 36 consecutive matches against the ‘manos’, who managed 39 in reply. The overall record, however, belongs to Atletico de Madrid. They scored in 40 consecutive matches against Real Valladolid, starting from their first meeting in 1948 until a goalless draw in November 1986. During this period, the ‘colchoneros’ racked up 93 goals, conceding 60.
