Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen expresses gratitude to national team coach Luis de la Fuente for his call-up to the squad for March friendlies against Serbia and Egypt, following a period where he admits his form dipped but now feels he has recovered.
“I’m very proud to be here, it’s an honour to represent my country. I believe I went through a spell where I wasn’t performing at the level people know I can reach, and that I’m now achieving again. We’re in good shape as a team,” he stated, acknowledging a difficult spell with Real Madrid and his subsequent resurgence.
Huijsen respects the criticism he has faced, choosing to focus on the positives, particularly the continued support from the national team coach. “That’s what I work for every day, to be here, which is an honour. The press has to talk about something; I don’t interfere with your job,” he commented.
Regarding Real Madrid, after a discussion with Atletico Madrid midfielder Alex Baena about Fede Valverde’s tackle that resulted in a straight red card for the Uruguayan, Huijsen maintained it should have been a yellow card.
“I still think the same; I believe it stops the play and it looks like a yellow to me. Obviously, he kicks the ball and it’s a foul, but it’s a yellow, and if they look at it on VAR, it’s clear he makes contact with the foot, not the studs,” he defended.
