A somber Lionel Scaloni admitted to feeling sad in the wake of defeat, noting he had a “whole lot of things to say” that were best kept behind closed doors for now. The ‘Albiceleste’ coach maintained that his players remain gracious in both victory and defeat, while candidly acknowledging that the side led by his friend Luis de la Fuente “were the better team” on the day.
“That is the truth,” he added with an air of resignation. Having guided Argentina to their historic third world title four years ago, Scaloni saw the chance to secure a fourth slip away on Sunday following the 1-0 loss to Spain.
Despite the heartbreak, he insisted that the magnitude of their journey remains significant. “I do remember the runners-up, because getting here is difficult. You have to place enormous value on what we have achieved,” he reflected.
“I have a lot of things to say about how we got here, but it is not worth it,” he remarked, hinting at the various hurdles his squad overcame throughout the knockout phases of the World Cup..
He emphasised that while they were outplayed by a superior opponent, the squad’s tournament exploits should not be forgotten. “To the country, I want to say that we gave everything,” he declared, describing his team as “a great example for the people.” “When you lose, you have to get back up,” he concluded.
