FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated on Thursday that “all” European football stakeholders are moving towards “an agreement” to “pacify” disputes between UEFA and the European Football Clubs (formerly ECA) regarding the Super League project, of which the ‘Blaugrana’ club, along with Real Madrid, remains a part.
Joan Laporta, arriving from Rome on Thursday after attending the EFC’s annual assembly as a guest on Wednesday, acknowledged, in statements to the media at a Cruyff Foundation event in Barcelona, that there is positive dialogue with European football’s governing body.
“There’s significant progress, and the projects being developed within the Super League are valuable and being considered by UEFA. I believe we are all aligned in reaching an agreement that brings peace to European football,” he stated.
The Barcelona president was greeted warmly upon his arrival in Rome on Wednesday with an enthusiastic embrace from Naser Al-Khelaifi, president of the EFC and PSG. He also attended the event’s gala dinner that evening, where he met with Aleksander Ceferin, the president of UEFA.
“We are in the process of reaching an agreement with both Ceferin and Al-Khelaifi, who are in a position to promote this agreement and welcome us back into the fold of UEFA and the ECF,” he added.
He emphasised that Barcelona “is determined to reach an agreement,” a position that, according to Laporta, he had previously explained to Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez.
“I believe there’s room for collaboration between the Super League and UEFA, allowing clubs in the Super League to return to UEFA. We see this agreement progressing, and we hope it materialises. Barça feels very connected to UEFA and the ECF,” he concluded.
